Simple Homemade Pizza Sauce

This simple homemade pizza sauce is quick to prepare and full of flavor. Made with canned tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and Italian herbs, it creates the perfect base for any pizza. The sauce is simmered gently to bring out the sweetness of the tomatoes and the aroma of the spices. It’s versatile, freezer-friendly, and much tastier than store-bought versions.

Ingredients

  • 14 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes optional, for heat

Method

  1. Prepare ingredients: Open the can of tomatoes and set aside. Mince the garlic finely so it blends well into the sauce. Have all your spices measured out and ready.
  2. Cook garlic: In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30–60 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Do not let it brown, as burnt garlic will make the sauce taste bitter.
  3. Add tomatoes: Pour the crushed tomatoes into the pan with the garlic and oil. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. Season the sauce: Add sugar, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well so the herbs and spices are evenly distributed.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. The sauce should thicken slightly and the flavors will meld together.
  6. Adjust taste: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed—add a pinch more sugar if the tomatoes are too acidic, or more salt and herbs to your liking.
  7. Cool and use: Remove from heat and let the sauce cool slightly before spreading on pizza dough. Use immediately or store for later.
